Ireland has taken an important step towards decarbonising aviation with the launch of its first Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Policy Roadmap. This roadmap is developed by the Department of Transport, with input from the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Task Force. It sets out four key pathways for advancing SAF in Ireland:
🔹 Creating market certainty
🔹 Strengthening collaboration
🔹 Supporting uptake
🔹 Supporting production
At the SusAlgaeFuel project, we are proud to contribute to this effort. Our work focuses on exploring the potential of microalgae-based SAF. This is a promising pathway that aligns with both Ireland’s ambitions and EU climate targets.
The new roadmap rightly recognises that there are no immediate large-scale alternatives to liquid fuels for aviation. Therefore SAF plays a pivotal role in the short to medium term. By fostering innovation and collaboration, we can help ensure that Europe and Ireland are well-positioned to scale up sustainable fuel solutions.
We are encouraged by the ambitious outlook of the roadmap and look forward to seeing some more details on the “targeted measures” implied in the action items to drive SAF development in Ireland, and to collaborating with industry, policymakers, and researchers to help turn this ambition into action.
